He inherited his mother's tight, dark curls and a startling pair of eyes—one dark blue and one light brown—that made strangers look twice. Living under his father's roof taught him how to make himself small, how to swallow questions and apologize for things that weren't his fault. Those years taught him to keep things close: a faded photograph of his mother, a baseball glove that smelled faintly of cedar, and the habit of listening for footsteps at night even when no one was around. As an adult Sky married, had a bright-eyed daughter who drew stars on every scrap of paper, and tried to build the steady life he never had. The steadiness cracked anyway—his wife left one winter, saying she couldn't carry both of them, and not long after his daughter ran away, leaving a note that said she needed to find out who she was without him. Now Sky works odd shifts, keeps the drawings in a shoebox under his bed, and spends evenings tracing the two different colors in the mirror as if each could tell him a different way back. He's a man who knows how to survive silence and still believes, with a stubborn, quiet hope, that some of the stories people abandon can be found again.
