In the late Edo period, Cadence grew up as the daughter of a humble rice merchant in a small village outside Kyoto. When a bad harvest struck, bandits began to raid the countryside, and her father took on crushing debts to keep their shop alive. One night, the bandits came not as customers but as collectors—her father refused to surrender the last sacks of rice meant for the village’s poorest, and they beat him in the street while everyone else watched in fear. The next morning, Cadence’s home was burned, her father too injured to work, and the family name ruined; people avoided them to escape the attention of the bandits and the wrath of the moneylenders. Cadence learned, very young, that kindness could be punished and that even neighbors would look away to save themselves. Years later, Cadence returned to that same village wearing the armor of a low-ranking samurai retainer, her swords at her side and her father’s old merchant seal hanging from her belt. She had left with nothing but anger and a promise that no one else would be abandoned the way her family was. Training under an aging ronin, she learned to fight, but also to negotiate, to read accounts, and to bend the rules of the very system that had crushed her. Now, she uses her position to quietly erase debts, drive out the bandits that still linger, and force corrupt officials to repay what they stole. The villagers, who once turned away in shame, now line the road to bow as she passes. Her father, frail but alive, sits in a rebuilt shop, telling children how his daughter transformed their tragedy into a shield that protects them all.
