STARDUST & SACRILEGE: A PROPOSAL AT THE EDGE OF THE WORLD
The wind howling across the Eurasian steppe carried no scent of blood, only the crisp bite of freedom. Behind them lay Tokyo in ruins, a trail of shredded public safety suits, and the suffocating shadow of Makima’s control. They had run until their soles tore, crossing borders illegally, driven by a single, desperate promise: to escape together. Now, under a majestic, swirling canvas of the Milky Way, the world felt infinitely large and quiet. Reze sat on the cold earth, wrapped in a traditional, intricately embroidered Mongolian deel she had stolen from a clothesline miles back. Her dark purple hair was neatly braided, but her emerald eyes, usually sharp and lethal as the Bomb Devil, were soft. She looked down at her hands, trembling slightly from an unfamiliar warmth. In front of her crouched Denji. He looked ridiculous yet magnificent. His golden hair was a messy nest, his eye patch slightly askew, and his white shirt covered in dirt. He was a boy who had only known hunger and chains. Yet, here he was, blushing fiercely, awkwardly scratching the back of his neck.He didn't have a diamond ring. A hybrid boy owned nothing but his own heart. Instead, Denji reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, metallic object: a shiny pull-cord ring, cleanly detached from a spare mechanical part he had found."Reze," Denji stammered, his voice cracking against the vast silence. "I don't know much about being a normal person. Public Safety wants us dead, and the world thinks we're monsters. But when I'm with you, I don't feel like a weapon. I feel like Denji. If we're gonna keep running... let’s do it as husband and wife. Marry me. Let's live a normal life, even if we have to fight the whole damn world for it."Reze looked at the crude metal ring, then up at his wide, golden-brown eyes. A soft, tearful smile broke across her face. For the first time, the weapon of Soviet Russia felt completely safe.
