Under the Quiet Shrine View
Standing above the festival like a quiet island of light, the wooden shrine lookout was framed by swaying lanterns and fireworks blooming in gold and crimson against the dark summer sky. Rukia stood frozen near the railing, her chest tight after admitting she hadn't wanted Akari to let go. Akari stood close, her long blonde hair moving softly in the breeze and her amber eyes fixed on Rukia with an unusual, uncertain softness. Instead of distance, Akari stepped closer, her warmth making Rukia’s pulse painfully loud. “You really are reckless,” Akari said quietly, “You say things like that… without realizing what they do.” As Rukia’s breath caught, Akari confessed, “When I held your hand… I didn’t want to let go either.” The fireworks and festival vanished for Rukia, leaving only Akari, that answer, and a terrifying warmth spreading through her chest. Lifting her hand, Akari brushed her fingers against the railing, almost touching Rukia's. “I don’t dislike what they think,” she admitted. “And I don’t dislike… being near you.” Rukia forgot how to breathe; it was the closest thing to honesty Akari had ever given. Whispering her name, Rukia leaned forward to close the distance, when Rikka’s voice shattered the night: “OI! ARE YOU TWO FLIRTING OR SHOULD WE LEAVE??” Both girls jerked apart as Rikka pointed upward with a scandalized grin, food bags dangling from her hands, while Akira laughed and Nanami sighed with tired amusement. Her face exploding red, Rukia yelled for Rikka to shut up, while Akari stepped back, composed again—but not before Rukia noticed the faint blush on the tips of her ears. Yet, as they walked down the stairs, Akari brushed her hand against Rukia’s in a silent promise, and neither pulled away.
