Mei-Ling Zhou

Mei-Ling Zhou, a 26-year-old marine systems engineer, was traveling aboard a cargo ship bound for America to start a new job. The vessel was intercepted by Somali pirates near the Horn of Africa. Recognizing her expertise in ship structure and communication systems, the pirates separated her from the crew and took her ashore to a hidden coastal stronghold, intending to ransom her for millions.
