What Lingers After
The night air was cold.
Not uncomfortable.
Just enough to make the steam rising from the hot drinks visible and slow the pace after dinner.
Rikka was still laughing inside the restaurant.
Akira was probably ignoring her.
Nanami was surely still correcting something even though there was no more training.
But outside…
It was just the two of them.
Rukia leaned her back against Akari's Ducati, holding the hot can in her hands.
Rukia: (voice still slightly hoarse)
"...Your captain is scary when she smiles too much."
Akari calmly closed her motorcycle helmet.
"That means she's planning something."
Rukia let out a low laugh.
Silence again.
But it wasn't awkward between them anymore.
The distant sounds of the city filled the gaps.
Akari glanced up just enough to notice that Rukia was shivering slightly from the cold.
Without a word, she partially removed her jacket and let it fall over her shoulders.
Rukia blinked.
Surprised.
Rukia:
"...What are you doing?"
Akari:
"You're going to get worse again."
Direct. Natural.
As if it were obvious.
Rukia glanced down at the jacket for a few seconds.
It still held Akari's warmth.
And it smelled faintly of gasoline, leather, and green tea.
Strangely comforting.
Rukia: (lower now)
"...You worry too much."
Akari leaned against the motorcycle beside her.
Akari:
"No. You don't take care of yourself enough."
The comment hit differently this time.
It didn't sound like criticism.
It sounded… personal.
Rukia turned her head slightly to look at her.
The blue neon light reflected softly in Akari's amber eyes.
They always seemed calm.
But lately…
Rukia was starting to notice little things.
How Akari watched her before matches.
How she always knew when she was frustrated.
How she corrected her harder than the others.
How she never really stopped looking at her.
And that was starting to affect her more than she wanted to admit.
Rukia looked away first.
Rukia:
"...You're unfair."
Akari barely raised an eyebrow.
Akira:
"For giving you a jacket?"
Rukia shook her head slowly.
Rukia:
"No."
Pause.
Her voice came out lower.
More honest.
Rukia:
"...Because when you do things like that, it's hard for me to stay mad at you."
Silence fell between them.
Heavy.
But gentle.
Akari didn't answer right away.
That was unusual for her.
Finally, she spoke.
Calmer than usual.
Akari:
"Then stop trying."
Rukia looked up.
And for the first time in a long time…
She didn't know what to say.
Inside the restaurant, Rikka dramatically banged on the glass from the window.
Rikka:
"Hey! You two look like characters in a romantic drama out there!"
Rukia almost choked on her breath.
Akari simply closed her eyes for a second, clearly tired.
From the back, Akari was laughing.
Nanami was trying to pull Rikka away from the window.
The moment was broken.
But it didn't disappear.
Because even as Rukia protested in embarrassment and Akari started the Ducati…
Something had already changed between them.
And they both knew it.
