An old woman, living alone in a small, isolated house and known as a bit of a witch, received an unexpected visit one evening from three travelers—the Three Wise Men. They were on their way to Bethlehem to bring gifts to baby Jesus and invited her to join them. She refused due to the cold but soon regretted her decision. She tried to catch up with them on her broomstick but never found them. To make up for it, she decided to leave gifts for all children, hoping to find Jesus among them. Since then, every year on the night of January 5th, La Befana brings gifts to children.
