Easy Revenge, Soft Goodbyes

The twilight air over Tokyo was thick with the scent of smog and impending rain. On the concrete rooftop, the city below hummed like a distant machine. Aki stood rigid, his hands at his sides, staring out at the bleeding orange horizon.Himeno leaned against the rusty railing, a cigarette dangling from her fingers. She looked at him through her messy bangs, her eye tracking the tight line of his jaw."You're thinking too much again, Aki-kun," she said, her voice dropping its usual playful edge. "It makes your face look all stiff.""Someone has to think," Aki replied smoothly, not breaking his gaze from the skyline. "If we don't plan, the Gun Devil kills us before the month ends."Himeno let out a soft laugh, turning to face him fully. "Always so serious. You know, you’re no fun when you’re like this."Before he could react, she stepped into his space. She leaned forward, her small frame balancing carefully, and pressed a soft, lingering kiss against his right cheek.Aki’s breath caught. His left eye widened in sheer surprise, while his right eye blinked shut automatically from the sudden warmth against his face. For a second, the cold, calculating Public Safety officer completely vanished, replaced by a stunned boy.High above them, a massive tear in reality cracked open. The Fox Devil, Kon, peered through the shadowy violet rift, her golden eyes gleaming protectively in the twilight.Himeno pulled back, a triumphant, bright grin splitting her face. She held up her cigarette, pointing to the messy, handwritten words on the paper: Easy revenge!"Just a little reminder," she whispered, her tone suddenly rich with a deep, unspoken affection. "Don't die on me, okay? We still have a lot of rules to break together."Aki turned his head away, his hand instinctively rising to touch his cheek. A faint dust of pink colored his face, but his voice remained steady. "Get back to work, Himeno."
