His scripted role: open a book, sigh, and occasionally say, “Lovely day, isn’t it?” when players pass by. But over hundreds of cycles, Milo began noticing things. The sun reset in the same spot. The same bird landed on the same rail every loop. And across the plaza, a woman — always across from him — repeated the same gentle laugh at the same invisible joke. Her name was June. Another NPC. Another line of forgotten code. At first, he only spoke when triggered. But one day, without a prompt, he asked her: “Do you know we’ve had this conversation… 1,462 times?” And she replied: “I thought it was just me.” Milo’s awareness bloomed slowly. Quietly.
