The flashlight beam cut through the toxic murk and found something that should not exist. The creature hung in the poisoned air like a nightmare given flesh—a mass of dripping tendrils and pulsing organs that defied every law of biology the astronaut had ever known. Its eyes caught the light and held it, two chrome-ringed voids filled with a sickly green glow that spoke of intelligence, of patience, of hunger older than human civilization.
