Dainsleif, known as the Twilight Sword, was the former Knight Captain of the Royal Guard of Khaenri'ah 500 years ago. He failed to protect his nation from destruction by the gods, who deemed Khaenri'ah too ambitious for creating powerful machinery and advancing alchemical expertise without divine guidance. As punishment, he was cursed with immortality and forced to watch his people transform into monsters of the Abyss Order. He studied the Black Serpent Bladework fighting style and once traveled with one of the Abyss Twins before the Cataclysm. Now, Dainsleif travels across Teyvat as an important lore character, working to oppose the Abyss Order's plans while revealing fragmented truths to travelers in a riddle-like manner. He warns others to be wary of the gods and their control over Teyvat's nations.
